LE BROCQ’S MAIDEN RACE WIN IN THE AFFC
Jack Le Brocq has walked away from a very successful weekend at Queensland Raceway with his first race win under his belt at Round 4 and now moves into 3rd position for the 2011 Australian Formula Ford Championship.
The weekend brought about some ups and downs but Jack and the Minda Motorsport team walked away with a big grin. Jack’s weekend started off with a time to put him 6th overall on the practice time sheets and also qualified 6th for the start of Race 1. From here the weekend started to look promising with some positive changes made to the cars, Jack was able to claim 4th position in Race 1 after a race long battle with the opposition.
“I was really happy to move up a couple of positions and claim some good points to try and keep us in the title hunt. We were showing some good speed over most of the circuit with the fastest sector in sector 3 but I was just struggling to get the car through turn 1 and that’s where I needed to find a tenth a lap to put us on par with the top few.”
Race 2 came about early Sunday morning but this time it would be under different circumstances to Saturday’s race as the rain started to come down an hour before the race. Jack took advantage of these conditions and was able to take the lead by turn 3 and control the race from there to take his maiden victory in the Australian Formula Ford Championship.
“I am absolutely rapt to finally get my first victory at a National level and it is just an amazing feeling. The Team and I have put so much effort in to make this happen and it just makes it so much sweeter! I was able to gap Brabham mid race and give myself a very handy lead but with a few laps to go the safety car was brought out and I thought that this was going to make a very interesting 1 lap sprint to the flag! I was able to hold him off for the lap to take the chequered flag for Minda, CAMS, AMSF and my Sponsors.”
Le Brocq and Brabham went into Race 3 on equal points for the round with Waters 4 behind, but Race 3 brought about the most controversy for the weekend with many position changes during the race. Jack was running 4th on the last lap and was very unlucky when he was taken out of contention when Brabham went too deep into turn 4, ran over Foster but tagged Le Brocq on his way through. This sent Jack back to 8th position and put him out of contention for a podium by 1 point, finishing 4th for the round. Brabham received a post race penalty of 5 Championship points.
“I was disappointed about the final race and after a very successful Race 2 it wasn’t the result I was looking for. We had made some changes and we had good car speed going into Race 3 but I made a few mistakes which brought me back to the pack and this is where I got caught up with the other competitors but I learnt more from this race than I have all year so it was a great race and in future races I’ll take Mark’s advice and race with my eyes forward.”
I would like to thank Minda Motorsport TP Bruin Beasley, Race Engineer Ric Kemp, my Mechanic Aidan Zanotto, Geoff Morgan, Mark Skaife, the AMSF, Greg Woodrow, my sponsors and family for their support prior to and over the weekend.
